My husband and I have been wanting to go on a "different" kind of holiday for some time, and, after watching Top Gear last night, think that a similar trip to theirs would be perfect for us! We would both like to go to Vietnam, however, I cannot seem to find any good sites that offer un-escorted motorbike trips, and/or flight/hotel packages! Does anyone have any ideas or recommendations? We’re hoping to do it in 2009 before we start a family.(we live in the UK so would be starting our journey from there)
Haha! I LOVED that episode!!!!
Okay, if you really MUST go through a travel company, then try intrepid travel (just type the name into a search engine), they offer all sorts of activity/trekking/specialist trips all over the world.
But I would REALLY reccomend doing it independently. I have backpacked all throughout the region and believe me it is a lot cheaper, just as easy and a LOT more rewarding!!!!
Buy a Lonely planet Vietnam book or look at their website for information and ideas, and just go! It really is as simple as that. If you want to ride through Vietnam it will be very easy to buy or rent a moped/bike when you are there. (I’ve rented them in many places through Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia).

It won’t live up to what TG managed so it’ll feel sad and empty. Nice try.

This is the best and cheapest way to see Vietnam . Get a flight only and make your way around . Saigon is a bit hairy as the roads are crazy but internal flights are so cheap that you can fly nearer to where you want to be as the roads are not great . Bikes are very cheap to hire and the longer you have it the cheaper . Always barter ask for one day price then ask for reduction on longer use . You normally have to hand your passport over for the Bike but this is safe but have a photo copy of passport and your visitors visa with you , as without a copy of your visa you will not be allowed to book into a hotel and there is no way round this . If you go on the road and intend to stay overnight book into the best hotel you can and BARTER . Of the beaten track the roads are pretty bad so make sure you have medical insurance just in case of accidents . But be aware if you do have a accident you are liable for the repair so be careful as you can get well ad truly screwed . Small repairs cost next to nothing so don’t worry as there is always somebody who will do the repairs for a few dollars , be on your toes though .

I have been to Cambo, Thailand, SG, and MY, You don’t need hotel reservations, just ask the cabdriver at the airport to take you to a cheap hotel( and make sure the meter works) You can get an a/c room for $20us.
It is a waste of time trying to prepare everything over the internet; all the sites are high-end $$$ hotels.
The bikes are 100cc scooters although you can get big bikes. It is only an issue if you want to take luggage.
