What I meant by the plural “gears” is a multi-speed free wheel, a multi-speed cassette or an internally shifting hub. A multi-speed Freewheel cannot shift without a derailleur, which a track bike with horizontal rear facing dropouts is by definition without. Good luck finding a cassette hub with a solid bolt on axle…they don’t make them. An internally geared hub requires a cable in order to shift. A shift cable requires housing and cable guides with which to route the housing.

Of course you can argue that the first bicycles to have horizontal dropouts were meant to be everyday bikes. That was before bikes were equipped with brakes. Horizontal (rear)dropouts have the advantage of allowing a mechanic/rider to tension the chain properly.

Let me qualify what I mean by “true track frame”. This would be a frame not drilled for break mounts, has no cable guides, and no derailleur hanger. The Cinelli Vigorelli frame could easily be considered without qualification a “true track frame”. Just to stay on topic the Vigorelli is one of the bikes that Kanye is supposed to own.

And you said you cant put multiple gears or even a freewheel on a true track frame..That is wrong.. IT all depends on the spacing between the drop outs.. The average 120 spaced drop outs on a track bike can fit gears in them..
And a true ‘track-track’ frame is not meant to be raced..There actually meant for conditioning and practicing.

TRUE TRACK FRAMES? There is no sense of TRUE TRACK-DROPOUT FRAME. In fact the first Track(dropout) frame wasn’t created for a velodrome or racing.

You can’t put multiple gears or even a freewheel on true track frame. Track frames do not have derailleur hangers, which would allow multiple gears. Running multiple gears or a break would in fact defeat the purpose of using a track bike because one would then have to rig cable guides and a shifter. It would take a moron to ride a track frame not as a fixed gear bike. True track frames are meant to be raced on a velodrome i.e. no brakes= no brake mounts.

Track bikes are not all fixies you morons..
A track bike is a frame with track dropouts. All fixed gears are fixies..
A track bike cane have gears on it just like any other bike it is just a preference to have it as a fixed gear.
And not all fixed gears are track bikes..A fixed gear is a fixed gear..A track bike is a track bike..A conversion is a conversion..
