I have a beautiful, classic black wool coat that I received as a holiday gift many years ago from my parents. It fits perfectly, and was very expensive, so I wanted to try to get it to last longer. It is covered in those little "pills" or tiny balls of fabric that occur when you’ve worn a garment many times. I’ve never had the coat dry cleaned or washed, so I’m not sure why it’s so worn out. Usually, I only have trouble with garments I’ve thrown in the drier a million times. I’ve actually never had a coat look this worn out. Even the motorcycle jacket I’ve had since 1994 is less worn out looking…then again, perhaps time adds to a biker jacket’s charm. Anyway..do you know of any way to remove those "pills" from the wool to give it a newer, smoother look? I think it’s a shame to just get rid of the coat and buy a new one, because this one has such a fantastic cut, and is literally timeless. I don’t like to waste hundreds of dollars on a new coat every year if I have a nice one that can be salvaged and be worn for a longer amount of time. If you know a way , please share your ideas…Thanks so much
I bought a sweater shaver from the laundry department at my local WalMart. It works great for getting those awful looking pills off fabrics. It looks a bit like an electric shaver but just takes batteries. That is the only think I know of that will fix your problem. If you’ve never seen one, I’ve included a link so you know what I’m talking about. Amazon prices are comparable with what I paid and it’s so worth the money to save something you love, especially if it’s expensive. Good luck.

I saw on a home show once, where they wanted to remove the pills form an older wool couch. They used disposable razors to gently shave the pills off. I also have a tool that looks like a fabric electric shaver. You can get these at Target.

A lint shaver works well, but go to your local dry cleaners and ask about a lint comb. It looks like a little comb with abrasives on it. These work SO well at removing those little pills. I use them on all kinds of stuff, even my cashmere sweaters.
Oh, and just having it dry cleaned will not remove the lint, unless your drycleaners has someone who will remove the lint for you!

There are several ways to get rid of bobbling. Personally I have a bobble shaver which gets rid of all manner of bobbling, but my mum uses an old man’s shaver which can be easy to use if you shave the flow of the bobble in the fabric rather than against it.
Another way is to use the cheaper adhesive fabric tape rolls you can buy that will pull the bobbling out. However of all the three suggestions a Bobble battery operated shaver is one of the better ways.
