My brother doesn’t have may interests in life except mountain biking? I would like to get him something that he can truly use for this sport. My problem being that he has a lot of equipment as it is and i don’t want to get him something he already has.
Anyone who is a mountain biker??? is there anything you wish you had, or is there something that every mountain biker should have?
Something that isn’t usual.
ok wow.. all great answers how am i suppose to pick a best.. damnit!!
im fairly generous .. i think im going to give him a gift basket with a bunch of everythign you guys mentioned.. thanks to everyone
Well, in mountain biking, gear that "isn’t usual" may turn out to be gear that wont be used often. So I think it’s best to stay away from the unique and radical.
Also, the gift doesn’t need to be a surprise.
Why not make the gift into a form of a "sibling-bonding-day". Take your brother to the bike shop in your area. It’s ok to be open with him about your budget. So to avoid any mismatched components, mis-sized clothing/helmet/shoes, or simple differences in preference, it is best that he is there to choose what he wants or needs. I’m sure he’ll very much appreciate the time both of you could spend sharing his interest in mountain biking.
If the gift really has be a surprise, a little bit of research and investigative work is needed. (Example: mountain bikers need a lot of socks and several jerseys and riding shorts, So snatch some of these from his wardrobe while he’s not at home. Take them to the bike shop (they’ll know what size) and get something that somehow is consistent to his style but would offer a fresh new "look".
My recommendation: Get him a hydration pack for trail riding (a popular brand is Camelbak). You can get it if you choose to have the bikeshop trip together. You can also get it as a surprise gift,as it offers adjustability so sizing is not an issue.
Stick to colors that will match his bike and helmet and majority of his jerseys and shorts.

Clothing is something that he’d always need – he can’t have every biking jersey or windbreaker on the shelves – as an avid biker, I’d always welcome any type of clothing, I go through a lot.

Well Krystina,
If your brother is into the sport there is never too much to have. Dont buy bicycle parts since you may not know the compatibility of his bike. However I love bike related gifts and the most desired are:
*Helmet
*Jerseys and/or Shorts
*Gloves
*Sun Glasses
*Socks
*Shoes
*Magazine Subscriptions
*DVD
If you decide to buy a nice set of Jersey and Short try to stay away from online catalogs. It is most probable that you wont get the size right; and returning and item which is a gift is a turn off. If you go for shoes sneak to his room and check his euro size (42, 43, 44 etc) since most cycling shoes are meassured in european sizes.
Hope this helps and Happy Birthday to your brother!

I don’t know your budget, but go look at the numbers on the sides of his tires. Take those numbers to the bike shop and buy him a real nice (high performance) set of tires and tubes. We cyclists are always going through tires.

That’s great you want to get him something for his cycling interest. I think it’s very hard to do though. I don’t think anyone could buy me anything because I have a lot of stuff but need a few things. Helmets, shoes etc. are too personal, meaning most avid cyclist are VERY particular about those kinds of things. Fit, function, bling, name brands etc. all come to mind as critical factors. I wouldn’t dare try to buy these things for another cyclist. The things I need or want are EXACTLY what I want not something close.
That being said, I don’t know your price range either. About the only thing a little out of the ordinary would be lights. A nice light set for night riding. These are sold in many places like nashbar.com etc. The bad thing is there are many kinds and they would cost $100 minimum, $150 to $200 for medium priced ones to be good enough for real night riding. Check them out.

Yeah…..what everyone said is true. We’re picky…..and if he’s unidimensional, he’s probably got most of what he wants and it might be hard to please him with normal bike stuff.
So check these out:
http://www.bikenames.com Stickers for his bike, helmet, gear, etc. that come in all colors and fonts. You can get his name, or whatever you want to type in the box. They’re cheap, durable, and look great. I just got a few for my bikes recently.
http://www.webcyclery.com/product.php?productid=17824 A simple to replace part on his bike (no mechanic needed) that he can snap on his favorite beer or soda bottlecap. Cool if you think he’d be into that.
http://www.jensonusa.com/store/product/GI302M02-Jenson+Usa+Wisecracker+Bottle+Opener.aspx Another simple part, but you’ll need to know what size seatpost his bike has (you could get this info out of him easily). If he likes an after-ride beverage, this would be cool and his buddies would flock to him.
Another REALLY cool thing would be a helmet cam…..they’re not cheap, but he’d probably love something like that. Check around, but you can find them from $120 to $300.
Other little items that aren’t unique but would be appreciated would be things like replacement pedal cleats for his shoes, chain lube, riding gloves, and a replacement chain.
You sound like a cool sister, sistah! I’m sure he’ll like whatever you get him.
