How many of you have (as a teen) or bought (as a parent) a dirtbike or motorcycle for your teen? ?

Was it a holiday gift? Did they have to earn it through grades? Cost?

My daughter has to earn her motorcycle by keeping good grades. She will get one on her 16th b-day instead of a car. On a motorcycle she wont be driving in bad weather, she can’t use a phone to text or call (no distracted driving), only one friend can drive with her, gas is cheaper and so is insurance best of all it is very hard to get pregnant in the back seat of one. This just seems like a safer option all around. She is also getting a 250cc which can go over 80mph but isn’t permitted on the free ways due to size.

How To Pick Out The Best Motorcycle Gifts

“The Best Motorcycle Gifts” is a totally subjective statement.  Subject, of course, to your opinion of the words “The Best”   There are all types of gifts you can give a biker ranging from a few dollars to thousands of dollars.  This is nothing you don’t already know.  What you are currently fighting with is: what do you give them this time and you are here looking for ideas.

This site is about finding the best motorcycle gifts for your specific motorcycle gift recipient!  The information given here is basic and written more for the non rider trying to buy the rider a gift but once you get through the basics this can even help a rider find their way towards the perfect gift.

So where do you start, a gift is by its very nature, a surprise.  If you haven’t tried it yet, spy.  Spy on them, talk to their biker friends, listen closely for little hints and try to develop a short list. Now see if there is something on that list that you can afford. 

If spying isn’t an option or you’re just not good at it, the following is a list of how to come up with and execute some motorcycle gift giving ideas.  Answer the next 10 questions as thoroughly as possible.

1)       What type of personality does your biker have? In other words if they were picking out a sun protection product would they get a 30 SPF cream called “Coppertone” or would they prefer a 30 SPF spray called “Red Neck Repellent”?

2)      Do they ride a Sport Bike (ride position is leaning over the bike, Racer type, Crotch Rocket, Ninja) or do they ride a Cruiser (ride position is upright, chrome headlights, speedometer on tank, floor boards)?

3)      Do they live for chrome or do they prefer colored parts or blacked out ones?

4)      Do they wear full leathers & a full face helmet or jeans, a t-shirt & a ½ shell helmet?

5)      Do they have tattoos & are they proud of them?

6)      Do they talk about how fast it’ll go or how pretty it is?

7)      Do they work on their own bikes or send it out for repairs?

8)       Do they take day trips or multi day tours?

9)      Are they male or female?

10)   How much do you want to spend?

 

The options are virtually limitless and mostly dependent on how much money you have to spend. Keep in mind if you are purchasing clothing and vehicle specific parts, you will need information.

 

Yes even gloves, sun glasses and helmets should be fitted. They are just like any other item of clothing, the actual size & fit depend on the manufacturer.  Sun glasses, did you say sun glasses?  Yes even sun glasses, if they are a little big they can blow off and if they’re too tight they will rub a sore spot above your ear.  If they have tattoos, sleeveless or tank top is probably the way to go.  The one great thing about clothes is, they are returnable and if you bought them over the internet or at a store the gift recipient will have a starting point from which to find the exact thing they want.

 

Motorcycle parts or accessories can be generic (one size fits all), type specific (cruiser / sport), brand specific (Harley, Honda, Victory) or model specific (Ultra Classic, ZX-14, VTX). You will need information to buy the parts. They can be easy to install or they can be a royal pain.  The most important thing here is the accuracy of your information.  Be prepared to answer questions like make, model, year, CC’s/CI, and options.   This is also a great time to know if your biker will work on things themselves or will they take it to a shop. If they are a shop repair / installation type person you might want to incorporate the installation with the gift.  Make sure whatever part you buy is able to be returned for a refund because a store credit may not offer a big enough selection.

 

 The easiest gifts to purchase for your biker are the generic ones.  These items take the least spying and usually less money than the above listed items.  They are the one size fits all type of product and once again your options are limitless: biker kits, helmet stick ons, patches, models, hats, bracelets, baseball caps, necklaces, motorcycle polish, earrings, decals, biker skin care, bifocal reader sunglasses, belt buckles, shoe jewelry, biker hand cleaner and biker pain relief products.

From the Tattoo Edinburgh comes the the sights and sounds of the 2007 Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Edinburgh Scotland during the Edinburgh Festival in August featuring acts from across the globe who take perform at Edinburgh Castle Edinburgh;

The Massed Pipes & Drums which consist of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, the Royal Corps of Signals, the Black Watch, 3rd Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland, the 2nd Battalion, the Royal Gurkha Rifles, the Scottish Universities Officers Training Corps, the Auckland Police from Australia, the Royal Caledonian Society of South Australia and not forgetting the fantastic pipe band , the Royal Army of Oman, eight bands in all.

More oversee acts at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo include the Taipei First Girl’s Senior High School Honour Guard and Drum Corps followed by the Middlesex County Volunteers Fifes & Drums from Massachusetts then the Massed Commonwealth Highland Dancers, the Imps Motorcycle Display Team from London’s East End, the Band of the Russian Moscow Conservatoire, the Trinidad & Tobago Defence Steel Orchestra and Drums and the Mounted Band of the Blues & Royals.

The Military Tattoos finale begins with the sound of the brass bands of the Massed Military Bands made up from the Light Cavalry Band, the Royal Artillery Band, the Band of the Royal Regiment of Scotland which is part of the prior Lowland and Highland Bands of the Scottish Division who combine with the entire cast to celebrate the Diamond Wedding Anniversary of Her Majesty the Queen and the HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh accompanied by the Tattoo Choir all combined to provide a truly memorable show forming the Edinburgh Tattoo taking place in Scotland Edinburgh.

Notable tunes for this years Scottish Tattoo include La Boum and Everything I do, I do it for you, not to mention the traditonal ending with the Hym for 2007 being the Barren Rocks of Aden followed by the Last Post and the Lone Piper playing the Crags of Tumbledown. The climatic burst of fireworks then brings the show to a close where the British Massed Bands make their way down the famous Royal Mile to the tunes, Scotland the Brave, We’re No Awa ‘ to Bide Awa and the memorable Black Bear which is traditionally played at the Edinborough Military Tattoo.

The Tattoo in Edinburgh UK is full of colour and spectacular atmosphere second to none, and makes it one of the best events to see during national holidays to Edinburgh or indeed seeing it as a local on the grand stands looking over Edinburgh Castle, the Edinburgh City and it’s esplanade.

There are also mini tattoo shows which take place in Edinburgh’s Princes Street Gardens and in George Square, Glasgow if you fancy seeing something a little different from the Edin Tattoo itself.

For getting to the Edinburgh Festival Military Tattoo in Edinburgh, United Kingdom during August and the Tattoo 2010, you can come via a flight coming into Edinburgh Airport and then booking yourself into one of the Edinburgh Hotels. There are a good number of flights to Edinburgh from many different countries oversees. Edinburgh Tickets for military performances available from December.

The Military Tattoo Edinburgh also has a Tattoo Shop based on Market Street near the Edinburgh City Centre where you can buy merchandise such as past performances of the Tattoo Show on CD, DVD and VHS dating back to the early 1990′s as well as lots more Tatoo Edinburgh gifts.

I produced this video using my Hi8 camera after gaining permission from Alan Smith , Marketing Manager for the Edin Tattoo. It was a great opportunity for me which I will never forget listening to the sound of bands up close and from above. I recently re edited this video, shortening it down from an hour which included a behind the scenes look at the show which I’ve taken out as the footage slowed down the pace of the video. I remember the fire of the canons at the beginning and the hairs which still today stand on the back of my neck. Personal highlights over the years include the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Steel Orchestra, HM Kings Guard of Norway and the glorious sounds of the Massed Bands of the Royal Marines not to mention the Singapore Police Pipes and Drums which visited Edinburgh in 2008.
